What is a Kua number?
In the Eight Mansions (Ba Zhai) branch of feng shui, your Kua number is a figure from 1 to 9 worked out from your year of birth and gender. It places you in one of two groups — the East group (Kua 1, 3, 4, 9) or the West group (Kua 2, 6, 7, 8) — and each Kua number is traditionally matched to four favourable and four unfavourable compass directions.
Your four lucky directions
The four good directions each carry a name and a theme: Sheng Qi (success and vitality), Tian Yi (health), Yan Nian (relationships), and Fu Wei (stability). Traditionally people try to face a good direction while working, or point the head of the bed toward one. These are preferences about orientation, described here for interest rather than as guarantees.
How this fits with the room planner
Kua directions depend on the person, so they sit outside our geometric bedroom planner, which reasons about walls, doors, and the commanding position of the bed. If a Kua direction and the commanding position disagree, most people keep the commanding position — being able to see the door from bed — and treat the Kua direction as a tie-breaker. A note on accuracy
If you were born in January or the first days of February, your birth may fall before the Chinese New Year, so the Kua calculation uses the previous year — use the checkbox above. Different practitioners also use slightly different formulas, so treat any single result as one traditional reading, not a fixed fact.
